Objectives

Recognize the importance of the Geological Heritage as a natural resource to preserve, enhance and advertise;
Knowledge of the existing national and international legislation on planning and management of geological heritage;
Contact with different examples of geoconservation in Portugal

Learning outcomes and competences

The course aims at developing the skills of the following developments in the student:

- Acquisition of a technical vocabulary related to the Geological Heritage;

- Awareness of the importance to preserve, enhance and promote geological heritage;

- Knowledge of geoconservation strategies .

Field trips
:
Visit to places where different strategies of Geoconservation are being implemented, namely Valongo Palaeozoic Park and Arouca Geopark, stressing the importance of preservation of geological heritage (paleontologic, geomining, geomorphological, and others) and different aspects of geodiversity.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The  exposure of the subjects, according to the contents, is accompanied by power point presentation. The field classes act as a supplement in the transmission of material given in lectures and are a key element for learning. During the semester several field classes related to different themes taught in lectures will be held.

Calculation formula of final grade

The assessment consists of: 
Theoretical final examination (2/3)
Report with oral presentation concerning one example of Geological Heritage (1/3). For the student to obtain approval must have a top note or was 8.0 in each of the evaluation components, on a scale 0-20.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Written work with oral presentation on a topic of geological heritage to the student's choice
