Objectives

Conducting detailed geological mapping in an area of 1 km2, with emphasis on the methods and techniques of geological mapping, data collecting (objectivity and representativeness to a given scale) and supporting documents (topographic map, aerial photography and satellite Google Earth). Interpretation and cartographic representation, involving different geological aspects (geological contacts; lithostratigraphic units, biostratigraphic units, structures). Preparation of detailed geological map and corresponding report.

Learning outcomes and competences

The development of the course aims at the development of the following skills in the student:

- be able to make an adequate sampling, collecting and interpreting data;

- be able to observe and interpret different geological structures;

- be able to insert in a topographic base the different purchased elements ;

- develop conveniently a geologic map.

Working method

Presencial

Program

Part 1 - Fieldwork with the entire group of students with teacher support: 1 - Recognition of geographical and geological of field study, in a Variscan context:- Main lithological units and characterization of different types of rocks; - most stricking structural characteristics  at regional scale and observation of the main types of geological contacts between the different units. 2 - General recognition profiles including: 2.1 -  cartographic criteria in metasedimentary or volcanic-sedimentary rocks - Observation and description of any markers or cartographic guide levels; - lithological characterization; - Characterization of the structures resulting from deformation, folds, faults, diaclases , foliation, lineation, and their cartographic representations; - Criteria for the definition of mapping units. 2.2 - Geological resources in the studied area: typology, geological characterization and contextualization.

Part 2 - Survey mapping of an area of 1km2 for each group of students, using topographic maps support, compass and GPS: - Definition of the units to map in the sector under study; - Characterization of their contacts; - Geological interpretive profiles of the structure in  the sector. Part 3 - Preparation of detailed geological map resulting from the work of each group and its individual repor.t Part 4 - Field examination, final discussion and evaluation of the work.
