Objectives
Geodetic techniques are fundamental for many surveying engineering activities, through the definition of a geodetic datum for geodetic control and to derive high accuracy geodetic horizontal and vertical positions. Therefore, this CU provides the theoretical and practical fundamentals of Geodesy relevant for topographic and geodetic field surveys.
Learning outcomes and competences
The students are expected to:
a) understand the gravity field of the Earth and the geoid determination;
b) understand how classical/modern geodetic networks are established, the relevant geodetic observations and network computation/adjustment;
c) perform make computations on spherical and ellipsoidal Earth models;
d) understand the various height systems and how to apply them;
e) be able to apply this knowledge in other curricular units of the master (e.g., Positioning and Satellite Navigation).

2. Local Geodetic System (LGS). LGS and TRS datum transformation.
3. Geodetic networks, observations and computations.
4. Fundamentals of potential theory and the gravity field of the Earth.
5. The gravity field of the level ellipsoid and normal gravity.
6. The anomalous gravity field.
7. Gravity measurements and gravity reduction.
8. Technics for geoid determination.
9. Height Systems.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Theoretical classes are mainly based on Power Point presentations and available on the site of the course. Whenever possible, an updated copy of the UC Notes, in PDF format, is also provided to students.
In the tutorials, an extensive set of exercises covering all sections of the course, aiming at the application and consolidation of the knowledge acquired in the theoretical classes, is solved (software for numeric computation and data analysis, e.g., MATLAB, can be used).

Eligibility for exams
The attendance in the tutorial classes is compulsory according to the University of Porto rules.
Calculation formula of final grade
Two tests (T1, T2), which may contribute differently for the final grade, will be carried out during the semester. The weights (p1 and p2) will depend on the content of each test.
The grade will be equal to CT = p1 * T1 + p2 * T2.
The final grade of the UC is the CT in case it is equal or greater than 9.5 values. This corresponds to the grade of the Final Written Exam. Students can improve the grade in the Supplementary Written Exam.
For students who do not achieve a TC greater than 9.5 or do not take the tests, the final grade will be the one obtained in the UC Normal Period exam. Students can improve the grade in the Supplementary Written Exam.
