Objectives

To provide basic knowledge about the biology of the major invertebrate phyla, namely about morphology and systematics, using an evolutionary approach.

Learning outcomes and competences

To recognize specimens from the main phyla based on morphology. In some cases students should be able to identify animals to a lower taxonomic level.

Students should be able to explain phylogenetic relationships between major groups and to understand the function and adaptative meaning of some body structures.

Working method

Presencial

Program

Principles of Systematic Zoology, Taxonomy and Nomenclature. Classification and Phylogeny. Animal architecture (structural/functional plan). Essentials of animal development. Taxonomic classification and biology of some major invertebrate phyla: Protozoa, Porifera, Cnidaria, Ctenophora, Platyhelminthes, Blastocoelomates and other small phyla, Annelida, Arthropoda, Mollusca and Echinodermata.

Eligibility for exams

To be eligible for exams students must attend at least 75% of the programmed lab works. Simultaneously they must present a report, approved by the teacher, about each one of the lab works done, including the special work (reports about 66% of lab works will be requested to be eligible for exams). Students not eligible will be excluded. Attendance of practical lesson can be exempt for all students already eligible for exam in previous school years (granted upon request).

Calculation formula of final grade

The final classification will be obtained in a final examination concerning the subjects teached. The students with a classification ≥ 9.5 will be approved. Only students with both a regular (attendance of at least 75% of the programmed lab works) and satisfactory (with 66% of reports about lab works done and approved by the teacher) participation on practical lessons, including the special work, will be eligible for the final examination.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Written reports of lab works and  special work fulfilment.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Studentes exempt to attend the pratical lessons will be submited to a pratical examination to be elligeble. The assessment of special cases will be adjusted by the jury taking in mind their peculiar aspects.
