Objectives

It is intended that students understand basic concepts of signal and image processing and apply that knowledge to the processing of data (images and spectra), performing also its analysis for scientific purposes.

Learning outcomes and competences

Familiarization with the typical signals, taking as example  Astronomy (photometry, spectroscopy), their treatment and handling, using suitable software. Ability to solve general problems in the processing and analysis of these signals, interpretation of the results for scientific purposes.

Working method

Presencial

Program

- Basic concepts of signal and image processing.

- Data reduction/processing, taking few examples in astronomy: noise, calibration, detection, deblending.

- Applications: assessment of properties in stellar objects through  the spectroscopy and CCD images.

Mandatory literature

Teaching methods and learning activities

Practical classes with computer, allowing the treatment of astronomical signals and observations with appropriate software. These classes will be complemented with lectures on the fundamentals of the typical signals and data in Astronomy, their properties and treatment.
