Objectives

Give students skills: 1- interpretation of topographic  and geological elementary maps; work with scales; 2 - conducting geological and topographic profiles; 3 - use of stereographic projection in solving problems geological .

Learning outcomes and competences

Students should get to know: 1 - interpret topographic and geological elementary maps and work with scales, 2 - conduct geological and topographic profiles; 3 - use the stereographic projection in solving  geological problems.

Working method

Program

Introduction to the analysis and interpretation of maps and topographic and geologic profiles .
1. Reading a topographic map and a geological map; exercices with scales
2 . Conducting topographic profiles with and without over- elevation vertical scale .
3 . Conducting geological profiles using the geological information on maps.
4 . Conducting geological profiles using strike lines: the case of horizontal layers , vertical layers , layers sloping areas with discontinuities , folded and faulted areas .

Introduction to using the stereographic projection
1. Principles and applications , advantages and disadvantages ; constituent elements : the great circles ( meridians ) and the smaller circles , the network and the network of Wulff Schmidt .
2 . The projection of a plan and a lineation : marking plans , lines of maximum gradient , lines perpendicular to a plane ( plane polo ) . Marking a line through a plan of your rake (or pitch )
3 . Marking plans folded ( anticlines , synclines and folds lying ) and its elements ( flanks , axial planes and fold axes )
4 . Angles between lineations between plans and between planes and lineations , with emphasis on the smallest angle between a linear element and a plan.
