Objectives

The main goal of this course is to: - provide basic formation on experimental physics; - reinforce basic concepts in theoretical physics; - develop the method of working in group.

Learning outcomes and competences

To be able to do experiments. To be able to do literature research and to show results either orally or in written form.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

---

Program

Measurements of physical quantities in the laboratory. Theoretical models and experimental methods applicable to practical work. Basic Issues in determining the uncertainties associated with measurements. Theoretical explanation of the experiments.

Laboratorial execution of the experiments.

Teaching methods and learning activities

a) Each student is housed in group of 2 people, knowing in advance the work being undertaken by studying the protocol with detailed explanation of theoretical and experimental procedures. The student must always present in each class a book of records (lab-book type) composed of sheets of A4 inseparable. This lab-book is unique to this course where the student will make records of the work performed. Calculations and graphics needed to complete the work should, if possible, be held in the session itself. Exceptionally completion of the work or data processing can be completed outside the lab, with a delay of 1 week. The organization of the logbook should be simple with hand-written records (except with work on automatic acquisition by computer), in table format. The graphics can be done with the PC but its impression should be pasted on a sheet of notebook. In the lab-book does not make sense to write the theory of work The data recorded in the lab-book on every job should be the sufficient and necessary for the student to eventually develop a formal report more complete, when requested to do so. At any time the teacher can access a log for evaluation and control The teacher can, if necessary, keep the lab-book for a week The lab-book must contain at least the analysis on the 2 / 3 of work to be done in class, having to be satisfactory, and this being a requirement to have the conditions to not be excluded from making the final examination, which also requires that students do not miss more than ¼ of the schedule lessons . At the end of the year the student must return the notebook to the teacher, providing an element of evaluation (40%). b) Full report.
After having finished the series of work, the student must write a full report for a work chosen by lot, from one week after disclosure of the distribution of the draw. Weight rating: 40%. Grade lower than 9.5 (on a scale of 0 to 20) on the evaluation of the whole: LabBook + full report implies disapproval to the subject. c) Continuous evaluations. Weight rating: 50%.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

designation Weight (%)
Participação presencial 20,00
Trabalho escrito 40,00
Trabalho laboratorial 40,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

designation Time (hours)
Elaboração de relatório/dissertação/tese 15,00

Eligibility for exams

The lab-book must contain at least the analysis on the 2 / 3 of work to be done in class, having to be satisfactory, and this being one of the requirements to have the conditions to not be excluded from making the final examination, which also requires that students do not miss more than ¼ of the schedule lessons .

Calculation formula of final grade

Final classification =

40% LogBook with oral discussion

40% Report with oral discussion

20% Continuous evaluation

Examinations or Special Assignments

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

All valuation rules listed above to keep students covered by any other special status.

Classification improvement

In case of grade improvement: the classification is calculated as indicated above but now with the marks of the exam the 1st season replaced by that for the 2nd season.
