Objectives

- To understand the decision making in integrated pest management

- to know with are the components of integrated pest management

- to know what is a quarantine pest and what duty they have in the prevention of desasters due to pests.

- to know how to identify an insect

- to relate plant damages and pest

- to recognize pathogens causing infectious diseases in plants

Learning outcomes and competences

To know the main groups of pests and plant diseases. To do a correct diagnosis and propose a control method for a plant pest. To know how to write a tecnical report, discuss a topic and do a oral presentation.

1. Introduction to plant protection


Plant protection in different sustainable agriculture systems. Quarantine pests. Biodiversity in agriculture. Trophic relations in agriculture environment. Groups of pests. Plant protection national and international organisations


2. Entomology 


Importance of insects; Insect morphology; Metamorphoses; Insect classification and identification


3. Plant pathology 


Parasitism and disease development; Plant disease caused by fungi; Characteristics of plant pathogenic fungi


4. Strategies in integrated pest management 


Risk assessment; Decision making and threshold


5. Methods of control


Biological control, chemical control, cultural control, biotechnical control

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures and workshops will altern – one week students have a 3,5 hour lecture and the other week students will have a 3,5 hour workshop. Workshps can be at the laboratory, at computers-lab or in the field or even study visits. In order to seek advantage of a good weather necessary for the practices in the field, there may be change in the schedule, however the total number of hours is respected.

Calculation formula of final grade

Evaluation: six assignments are proposed. Final classification 20 points is calculated by the sum T1 (6 points) + T2 (2 points) + T3 (2 points) + T4 (4 points) + T5 (4 points) + T6 (2 points). Students can choose between submitting assignments or attempting exam. All students can do to the second exam date.
