Objectives

 The overall objective is to provide to students a multidisciplinary field related to geological environment, so as to allow its action on various levels and its insertion in companies for environmental purposes.

Learning outcomes and competences

Ability to solve problems within the training area in the Earth Sciences and Environment, interpretation of geological processes vs. environmental and reasoning of their own arguments;

- Ability to collect, select and interpret relevant information, particularly in the area of training that will enable them to support the solutions we recommend and the judgments that issue, including the analysis of social, scientific and ethical aspects;

- Skills that allow communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions;

- Skills that allow for life long learning.

Working method

Presencial

Program

Introduction. Catastrophes and natural dissasters: concepts. Natural dissasters linked to the processes of internal and external geodynamics. Climate, Tectonics and global biogeochemical cycles. Erosion and desertification. Processes of physics and chemistry of the atmosphere and the associated environmental phenomena. Contamination of soils, waters and aquifers, causes and effects. Geotechnology and geoenvironment. Geomedicine and human health. Geology and urban environment.

Theoretical and practical classes:

Implementation of emergence plans in the volcanic area. Working in the field: Evaluation of coastal erosion processes. Floods: environmental analysis of river regulation. Causes and effects of landslides. Assessment of contaminated soils. Field Work: Mining activity, environment and environmental remediation strategies. Urban geology and environment. Environmental impact.

 In terms of teaching methodologies and learning, the learning effort should focus on the workload of students. Reservation for the teacher, a demanding role in guiding the work of their students, encouraging individual research, the effort of self-learning and seeking knowledge by experiment. Assumption of a logic oflearning assessment, based on a close relationship with the original objectives for the proposed curriculum; Refusal of any chance of laxity with regard to levels of demand, taking into account that the environment of "competitiveness" always tends to increase. The lectures will be available online (Moodle platform) at the beginning of the semester. The evaluation focuses on the form of periodic evaluation, with a final exam, encompassing both theoretical and field theory - practice. Elaboration of practical work will includes the preparation of a set of reports. The evaluation methods are in accordance with the standards of "Teaching and Assessment", contained in the Statute of the Faculty of  Sciences, Universidade do Porto.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The realization of practical work satisfactorily, includes the preparation of a set of reports provided. The evaluation methods are in accordance with the provisions contained in the standards of "Teaching and Assessment", contained in the Statute of the Faculty of Porto.

Eligibility for exams

Calculation formula of final grade

Theoretical = 60% - Practical component = 40%

In any of these components, the final note, can not be less than 8.0 values. The note of the theoretical component can be obtained by: - conducting final exam.

The note of the practical component can be obtained from: - delivery of practical work done.
