Objectives

To provide an understanding of the principles and techniques of mineral study, and to present a general impression of the origin and evolution of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.

Program

Mineralogy- Study of chemical composition, internal structure and properties of minerals; mineralogical constitution of the earth crust (importance of frameworks silicates). Introduction to optical mineralogy.
Petrology
Objectives and methods.
Magmatism and magmatic rocks. Genesis and characteristics of the main types of magmas. Solidification of magmas, magmatic differentiation and consequences. Forms of magmatic bodies and texture and structure of magmatic rocks. Chemical and mineralogical classifications of magmatic rocks.Magmatic rock associations and geodynamic implications.
Metamorphism and metamorphic rocks. Agents, types of metamorphism and characteristics. Structure and textures of metamorphic rocks. composition and characterization of the main metamorphic rocks. Basic concepts of metamorphic facies and metamorphic series.
Sedimentation and sedimentary rocks. Weathering and origin of sediments. Tectonic control of deposition and deposition environments. Genesis, characterization and classification of the main types of sedimentary rocks.
