Objectives

It is intended, along the course, to teach and consolidate the concepts and principles of reference systems (global, regional and local), reinforce these skills through practical applications and encourage the interconnection between disciplines in the field of Surveying Engineering.

Learning outcomes and competences

The students should know the concepts of terrestrial reference system and celestial reference system, and should understand the transformation between these two systems, the concept of time systems and height systems (vertical reference systems).

Working method

Presencial

Program

1. Introduction: Reference Systems and Reference Frames

2. Fundamental concepts of Geodesy and Coordinate Systems in Geodesy

3. Time Systems

4. Terrestrial Reference System

5. Celestial Reference System

6. Earth Orientation Parameters – Transformation between both systems

7. National Data and Data Transformations

8. Height Systems

9. Standards of Geospatial Information

Mandatory literature

Babcock; The Earth.s Rotation and Reference Frames for Geodes.and Geody.-Sy.128

Complementary Bibliography

Vanicek; Geodesy
Smith James R.; Introduction to geodesy. ISBN: 0-471-16660-X

Teaching methods and learning activities

The course encompasses lectures that are presented using multimedia technologies and will be available on the site of the course.
In the tutorials, an extensive set of exercises covering all sections of the course are discussed.

Software

Matlab

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

Description Type Time (hours) Weight (%) End date
Attendance (estimated) Participação presencial 75,00
Final written exam Exame 3,00 70,00
Report with resolution of the computational exercises Defesa pública de dissertação, de relatório de projeto ou estágio, ou de tese 30,00
Total: - 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Description Type Time (hours) End date
Execution of computational exercises Estudo autónomo 18
Total: 18,00

Eligibility for exams

The attendance in the tutorial classes is compulsory. The delivery of computational exercises in due time is also mandatory.

Calculation formula of final grade

Computational exercises (CE, 30%) and final written exam (FE, 70%).

Final grade = 0,30*CE+0,70*FE

The minimum mark of both components is 8 (on a 1 to 20 scale). In case of doubt, the students with inconsistent performance during the course might have to make an oral exam.
