Objectives
It is aimed that the students acquire knowledge about the methods used in marine positioning, depth measurements and are able to plan and perform a hydrographic surveying.
For this purpose teaching topics also include the properties of electromagnetic and acoustic waves, tides and its role in Hydrography.
In addition, the topic sea level variation is also addressed, aiming to teach the students the methodologies used to measure sea level variation and increase their awareness to this topic and the associated problem of the global climate change.
Program
1. Introduction
2. Marine positioning
3. Depth measurements
4. Hydrographic surveys
5. Ocean tides
6. Sea level variation

Teaching methods and learning activities
Theoretical classes are mainly based on Power Point presentations. Some of the topics are taught in the form of Seminars presented by specialists in the field.
In the Practical classes, a set of exercises is proposed, aiming to apply and consolidate the knowledge acquired in the theoretical classes.
Two field trips are usually made; one to APDL, where the students visit the Leixões tide gauge and participate in a hydrographic surveying; another to IH where they visit the institute, and one of the IH vessels

Evaluation Type
Evaluation with final exam
Eligibility for exams
Attendance of theoretical classes is not compulsory.
The students lose the frequency if they miss a number of practical classes that exceeds the number predicted in the University rules
Calculation formula of final grade
The assessment is based on a final exam (E). Students can also write an optional Report (R) about a topic of the program. In this case the final mark (FM) is computed as: FM=R*0.2+E*0.8
Examinations or Special Assignments
Students can also write an optional report about a topic of the program.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
The assessment method is the same as for regular students
Classification improvement
The students can use the methods predicted in the general University rules for mark improvement.
