Objectives

The subject Global Geology aims to build an integrated image of the functioning and evolution of the Earth planet through geological times. The accomplished of the objective described will be possible through the development of the following competences, here considered as partial objectives: -To be able to characterize the compositional variability of the crust and the mantle; -To understand and use the concepts of global geodynamic. -To interpret, focussing on the processes of plate tectonics, the genesis of the different rock types and from anomalous geochemical concentrations. -To identify and understand the processes of energy and mass transfer in the Earth system through its history.

Learning outcomes and competences

The student should be able to make an integrated analysis of a given geological process.

The student should know an analysis of a scientific paper and try to understand its message.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Considering the hierarchy adapted in the FCUP for the subjects of the different scholar grades and the fact that Global Geology is considered to be of grade 3 i.e. a subject which is a syntheses of the knowledge achieved, the table of contents here proposed required the mastery of the subjects lectured during the first two years of graduation in Geology.

Global Geology is therefore a natural improvement of subjects such as the Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology, Geochemistry and Geological Resources, thus substantiating part of the previous lecture programmes and integrating them in the global knowledge.

Program

Structure and evolution of the Earth Plate tectonic theory Subduction and the recycling of the crust Models of mantle evolution Lithological cycle and plate tectonics The Wilson cycle Origin of Oceanic Islands. The Azores example. Geotectonic context of Iberian Peninsula during the Paleozoic.

Eligibility for exams

All the classes are of theory and practical and the students must participate on a minimum of 75% of the number of realized classes and realise individual or group work of monographs about some important subjects to define.

Calculation formula of final grade

Final classification = 60% final exame + 40% presentation + monograph.
