To provide basic knowledge about the biology of some major invertebrate Phyla, namely about morphology and systematics, using an evolutionary approach.
To recognize specimens from the main phyla basaed on morphology. In some cases students should be able to identify animals to a lower taxonomic level.
Students should be able to explain phyligenetic relationships between major groups and understand the function and adaptative meaning of some body structures.
Principles of Systematic Zoology, Taxonomy and Nomenclature. Classification and Phylogeny. Animal architecture (structural/functional plan): Body symmetry; Germ layers and body cavities. Comments about animal development and life cycles. Taxonomic classification and biology of some major invertebrate Phyla: Protozoa, Porifera, Cnidaria, Ctenophora, Platyhelminthes, Blastocoelomates and other small Phyla, Annelida, Arthropoda, Mollusca and Echinodermata.

To be eligible for exams students must attend at least 75% of the programmed lab works. Simultaneously they must present a report, approved by the teacher, about each one of the lab works done (reports about 66% of lab works will be requested to be eligible for exams). Students not eligible will be excluded. Attendance of practical lesson can be exempt for all students already eligible for exam in previous school years.
The final classification will be obtained in a final examination concerning the subjects teached in theoretical lessons. The students with a classification ≥ 9.5 will be approved. Only students with both a regular (attendance of at least 75% of the programmed lab works ) and satisfactory (with 66% of reports about lab works done and approved by the teacher) participation on practical lessons will be eligible for the final examination.
The assessment of special cases will be adjusted by the Jury taking in mind their peculiar aspects.
Studentes exempt to attend the pratical lessons will be submited to a pratical examination to be elligeble.
