Ana Marta Pereira is an Assistant Researcher at the Sexual Plant Reproduction & Development Lab (SPReDLab), integrated in LAQV/REQUIMTE, and an Invited Assistant Professor at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto (FCUP).
Her research focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying plant sexual reproduction, with a particular interest in the role of arabinogalactan proteins (AGPs) and the regulation of the pistil transmitting tract. She obtained her PhD in 2015 from the University of Porto, with research stays at the University of Regensburg (Germany) and the University of Milan (Italy). From 2017 to 2019, she was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellow at the University of Milan, where she investigated the roles of AGPs and their epigenetic regulation in pollen–pistil interactions in Arabidopsis thaliana.
Throughout her career, she has participated in several national and international research projects funded by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT) and the EU Horizon 2020 program, including the SexSeed project (RISE, GA ID 690946) and the CRISPit project (GA ID 101086293). She currently coordinates the national PrOryza project, dedicated to identifying and promoting thermotolerant rice varieties adapted to Portuguese agriculture.
She is the author and co-author of publications in leading journals such as Molecular Plant, Journal of Experimental Botany, Annals of Botany, and The Plant Journal. In addition to research, she teaches several undergraduate and master’s courses at FCUP and supervises students across different academic levels. She is also actively engaged in science communication and in promoting Plant Biology to society.
