Apresentação Pessoal

Maria João Santos is an Associate Professor with Aggregation, whose main research area is the Parasitology of Aquatic Animals, and also the area of Scientific Dissemination.

She is Director of the Biology Bachelor.
She teaches in the Biology Degree several disciplines in the area of Zoology, namely Biology of Invertebrates and Biology of Vertebrates and Parasitology. She is also interested in Scientific Illustration and is director of the Specialization Course in Scientific Illustration - Illustration in Natural Sciences at the University of Porto.

In her research she is mainly interested in Metazoan parasites from the Myxozoa, Trematoda, Cestoda, Monogenea, Nematoda and Crustacea groups. She developed projects related to the Ecology of Parasites, being currently interested in Zoonotic Parasites transmitted by eating raw or undercooked fish, as is the case with Anisakis. She has already described several new species for Parasite Science. 
She belongs now to the European Community "Working Group of Parasites in Fishery Products", promoted by EFSA.
