Master in Environmental Sciences and Technology

InformationCourse/CS accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).

This degree prepares competent, versatile and able professionals, whether to analyse common environmental problems or to take detailed decisions and find solutions that are both ecological and economically viable. The skills and knowledge acquired as a result of this programme will allow its graduates to take on middle or upper level technical positions whether in the public sector or in the private or in self-employment in the environmental sector consulting firms and those in the service sector, local governments and governmental agencies and laboratories, industry and teaching.


Employment Prospects

Positions appropriate for those with Master's degrees in CTA include those in: effluent and residue management; environmental education; eco-efficiency; installation of systems of environmental quality, hygiene and environmental and occupational safety; environmental impact management; natural resources management and conservation; nature management and conservation; quality evaluation and control; the prediction, prevention and remediation of natural disasters; the description and treatment of areas of active desertification; and the recuperation of surface mining sites.

Admissions Requirements

  • Have a degree (or a legal equivalent) in Environmental Sciences and Technology, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Geology or related fields;
  • Hold a foreign higher academic degree in one of the areas described in the previous paragraph;
  • To be the holder of a school, scientific or professional curriculum that the scientific committee of the course recognizes as sufficient to attest the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies.

Note: All applicants who do not prove that they have completed their degree (or equivalent) by the end of the registration period will be excluded.

Criteria for Selection and Ranking

Candidates with a graduation, who do not yet have a graduation's degree and/or have an academic, scientific or professional curriculum, which is recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the statutory competent scientific body, will be ranked according to the criteria and sub-criteria below indicated (in the case of non-graduates, the measured average of the course will be replaced by the weighted measured average of the curricular units completed).

The ranking will be done according to the following criteria and sub-criteria:

  • Academic curriculum (area of training and average obtained course) (70%)
    • Subcriterion 1: training area (70%)
    • Subcriterion 2: average and degree adequacy (30%)
  • Scientific curriculum and professional experience (30%)
    • Subcriterion 1: technical and / or scientific publications and communications (70%)
    • Subcriterion 2: participation in research projects, internships in the study cycle area or other relevant professional experience (30%)

The adjusted grade is obtained by normalising the grade to the 0-20 scale, adding the value of ln(R/r), and rounding to the nearest integer in the 0-20 scale, with ln expressing the natural logarithm and R and r being, respectively for the University of Porto and the university issuing the degree, the positions in the world ranking published in http://www.webometrics.info

Tiebreaker: In the event of a tie, the result of an interview will be used as a tiebreaker.
