Master in Ecology and Environment

InformationCourse/CS accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).
Students completing this post-graduate training will have acquired the knowledge necessary to understand the biological aspects that are essential to the applied fields of ecology and biodiversity, landscape ecology and planning, environmental education and nature tourism, technology of environmental management, and the environmental characterisation, monitoring and recovery; they will also have acquired the most up-to-date techniques of these fields. The degree is intended for first cycle degree holders in the areas of biology, geology, environmental science, landscape architecture, agronomy or other related fields.

Admissions Requirements

  • Holding a first cycle degree in the fields of biology, ecology and/or environmental sciences, or in related scientific fields.
  • Holding a higher education degree obtained in a foreign institution, in one of the fields listed above.
  • Holding a first cycle degree in other areas, if the syllabus demonstrates an adequate basic scientific background for the study cycle.
  • Holding an academic, scientific or professional curriculum considered by the scientific board as attesting the capacity to carry out this study cycle.Available soon.

Candidates that do not hold their first cycle degree at the time of application, but are able to do so before the deadline for registration in the study cycle, must provide evidence on their weighted average grade by the time of application, as well as a list of the curricular units still to be completed in order to obtain the first cycle degree. Candidates that do not demonstrate having completed their degree until the deadline for registration will be excluded.

Criteria for Selection and Ranking

The ranking of eligible candidates will be made according to the following criteria and sub-criteria:

  1. Adjusted grade obtained in the first cycle degree, normalized to the [0,1] interval and multiplied by the adequacy factor of the scientific field of the degree (70%).

The adjusted grade is obtained by normalising the grade to the 0-20 scale, adding the value of ln(R/r), and rounding to the nearest integer in the 0-20 scale, with ln expressing the natural logarithm and R and r being, respectively for the University of Porto and the university issuing the degree, the positions in the world ranking published in http://www.webometrics.info

    • First cycle degree in the fields of biology, ecology and/or environmental sciences (1,00).
    • First cycle degree in other scientific fields (0,50).
  2. Additional academic education (10%).
    • Master’s degree (1,00), post-graduation course (0,90), post-graduate curricular units or other ECTScertified education (0,75), concluded in the fields of biology, ecology and/or environmental sciences.
    • Master’s degree (0,75), post-graduation course (0,60), post-graduate curricular units or other ECTScertified education (0,40), concluded in other scientific fields.
  3. Professional experience in the fields of biology, ecology and/or environmental sciences (10%).
    • With experience of project coordination and/or with more than 5 years of professional experience in the fields above (1,00).
    • With experience of participation in projects and/or with less than 5 years of professional experience in the fields above (0,75).
  4. Technical and/or scientific publications (10%).
    • Scientific publications (with DOI, in peer-reviewed journals) in the field of biology, ecology and/or environmental sciences (1,00) or in other scientific fields (0,75).
    • Technical publications (if published by institutions recognized in the field, and if the candidate is included in the citable author list) in the field of biology, ecology and/or environmental sciences (0,90) or in other scientific fields (0,50).

Candidates who do not possess a bachelor's degree at the time of selection and/or have an academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the statutory competent scientific body, will be ranked according to the criteria and sub-criteria indicated above, but replacing the final adjusted grade with the weighted average (adjusted) of the curricular units completed (mandatory information to be sent at the time of application).
