The programme’s specific objectives include:
- imparting new information about various topics in mathematics and its applications and the contact with new technologies
- developing the capacity to reflect about fundamental aspects of teaching/learning mathematics as well as about the challenges faced by teachers in the classroom with special emphasis on implementing innovative methods to the classroom teacing of mathematics
- developing and deepening student awareness about the evolution in basic mathematical concepts as well as the ability to reflect on its epistemological significance
Admissions Requirements
- Hold a graduation in mathematics or related field, preferably with math teaching experience;
- Hold a foreign higher academic degree in one of the areas described in the previous paragraph;
- Students enrolled in Postgraduate Mathematics for Teachers in previous school years;
- To be the holder of a school, scientific or professional curriculum that the scientific committee of the course recognizes as sufficient to attest the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies.
Note that all candidates who do not prove that they have completed the degree (or equivalent) until the end of the enrollment period, will be excluded.
Selection Criteria and Results
- Criteria: Professional Curriculum (weight: 0 to 50%)
Professional experience (number of years of teaching service (yt)) (weight: 0 to 30%)
- without teaching experience (yt = 0) (weight: 0%)
- less than 5 years of service (yt <5) (weight: 10%)
- between 5 and 10 years of service (5 ≤ yt <10) (weight: 20%)
- 10 or more years of service (yt ≥ 10) (weight: 30%)
Training actions in areas of mathematics (weight: 0 to 20%)
- without training actions (weight: 0%)
- less than 100 hours (weight: 10%)
- 100 or more hours (weight: 20%)
- Criteria: Academic Curriculum (weight: 5 to 50%)
Classification (c) of the graduation in mathematics or of the foreign higher academic degree in mathematics (weight: 10 to 50%)
- less than 14 (c <14) (weight: 10%)
- between 14 and 16 (14 ≤ c <16) (weight: 20%)
- equal to or greater than 16 (c ≥ 16) (weight: 50%)
Average grade (ag) in the subjects completed in the areas of mathematics, in a Portuguese degree, or in the foreign higher academic degree, in related area
- less than 14 (ag < 14) (weight: 5%)
- In the event of a tie, priority will be given to candidates with (in the order indicated),
a greater number of years of service
a greater number of hours of training in areas of mathematics
a higher rank in the bachelor's degree, or the foreign higher academic degree,
a higher average in completed subjects in Mathematics
a greater number of completed subjects in the areas of Mathematics
Interview with the candidates, valuing, in the order indicated,
the candidate's motivation
the importance of the master's degree in the candidate's professional careerbetween 14 and 16 (14 ≤ ag <16) (weight: 10%)
- equal to or greater than 16 (ag ≥ 16) (weight: 25%)
Candidates who do not yet hold a graduation and/or have a school, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting to the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the statutorily competent scientific body, will be listed in accordance with the criteria indicated above, but replacing the final average of the degree by the weighted average of the curricular units realized.
Candidate tiebreaker criterion
- In the event of a tie, priority will be given to candidates with (in the order indicated),
- a greater number of years of service
- a greater number of hours of training in areas of mathematics
- a higher rank in the bachelor's degree, or the foreign higher academic degree,
- a higher average in completed subjects in Mathematics
- a greater number of completed subjects in the areas of Mathematics
- Interview with the candidates, valuing, in the order indicated,
- the candidate's motivation
- the importance of the master's degree in the candidate's professional career
