Objectives

- Understand the scope and the modern importance of Biogeography.

-Understand the impacts of environmental changes on biodiversity patterns.

- Know and recognize the diversity of terrestrial biomes.

- Understand and interpret the biogeography of Europe and Portugal from a hierarchic perspective.

Learning outcomes and competences

- Skills to analyze and interpret patterns of biodiversity in multiple spatial and temporal scales.

- Evaluate the influence of ecological and biological factors on species richness and diversity at different spacial and temporal scales

- Application of the concepts and methods of Biiogeography in the assessment of specific problems.

Working method

Program

- An introduction to Biogeography. Species richness and biodiversity. - Patterns and gradients; distribution patterns. Islands and oceans.

- Paleobiogeography. Phylogeography.

- Multi-scale environmental changes and responses of biodiversity to those changes; climate change, biological invasions, land uses and other disturbances.

- Global biogeography: environmental conditions, terrestrial biomes, and biogeographic realms.

- Biogeography of Europe: enviromental conditions, biomes, and biogeographic regions.

- Biogeography of Portugal: environmental conditions, potential natural vegetaton, and biogeographic provinces.

Eligibility for exams

Attending and preparing all theoretical and practical classes is a basic requirement.
Theorethical classes are, nevertheless not mandatory.
Practical classes are mandatory though missing a maximum of 25% of the total number of classes is permited

Calculation formula of final grade

- Sum of classification in the final exam (14) and in the group projects (6) out of 20.

- Approval with a minimum grade of 9.5 out of 20.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Written essay necessary to attend the exam - contact the teachers

Classification improvement

- Improvement by repetition of the final exam. The 10% of the final grade obtained in the group project cannot be repeated.

- Approval with a minimum mark of 9.5 out of 20.
