Objectives

Introduce a global vision of Optics, going through the principles and methods of Geometric Optics, Optical Wave, Coherent Optics, Quantum and Nonlinear Optics, as well as other topics of modern optics, including some of its applications in technology.


It is intended that students not only develop knowledge and understanding at a basic level of these subjects, master the fundamental aspects of modeling and associated calculation methodologies, but also develop an overall view that allows them to develop these themes in more advanced or experimental curricular units.

Learning outcomes and competences








  • to grasp a global overview of Optics and its applications.

  • to acquire fundamental knowledge and skills in optics (polarization, interference, and optical diffraction)

  • to understand the principles and applications of optical instrumentation and measuring methods

  • to acquire an introductory knowledge of selected topics of Modern Optics .







Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Prerequisites : Electromagnetism, Wave physics, Trigonometry, Integral and Differential Calculus, Linear Algebra.

Other non-essential prior training: Basic programming skills (eg Python language).

Interferometry (Huygens Principle and interferometers)

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical classes of exposition and theoretical-practical classes of discussion and resolution of problems. The students must prepare the theoretical classes in advance, through a critical reading of the contents of the bibliography previously indicated, and completion of study activities (homework).

Observations


Tutoring schedule:

The time for questions is announced in Moodle and will take place in the teacher's office or in a room to be announced or remotly. Students must pre-book it and arrive within 10 minutes of the scheduled time.
For students that cannot (e.g. because of superposition with other cases) attend at the announced schedule, exceptionally a tutoring session can be scheduled to replace the normal schedule at a convenient time. In this scenario, the student needs also to make an appointment by email and suggest alternative schedules.

Situations not foreseen in this regulation:

Any situation not addressed in this course regulation will be analysed and decided by the instructor responsible for the UC. In particular, any situation where the students wish to ask for a change, a clarification or an exception, among others, and that is not addressed by the regulations of FCUP or other applicable, must do so in writing to the instructor responsible up to two weeks after the event that justifies such petition. If the instructor responsible so decides the request can be forwarded to be decided upon by the jury of the UC or the appropriate board or body of FCUP.

Course operation under conditions not foreseen in this regulation:

The preparation of this regulation admits that classes take place essentially in person and under normal conditions, however, extraordinar  situations may not allow the regular functioning of the uc.
In these situations, the rules indicated by the competent bodies of FCUP and UP prevail, and if necessary, changes to this regulation may be implemented after approval by the course directors. In particular, the possibility of replacing face-to-face activities with remote activities is foreseen.
