To provide an understanding of the principles of geochemistry applied to petrology. Practical exercises applied to selected case studies in order to characterize both the primary evolution and the effect of subsequent geochemical processes.
The students will be able to apply the acquired kjnowledge to case studies, in order to identify the involved geochemical and petrological processes, under the prespective of the genesis and evolution trend.
1- Definition and object of Geochemistry. Geochemical cycle.
2- The Earth and the Solar System. Origin of the elements and their cosmic abundance
3- The Earth as a chemical system. Primary geochemical differentiation. Geochemical reservoirs
4- Distribution of the elements in geological materials. Goldschmidt geochemical classification.
5- Geochemical laws. Goldschmidt empirical rules. The role of electronegativity in the behaviour of chemical elements in minerals
6- Fundamental concepts of chemical Thermodynamics and their application to geological systems
7- . Normative Minerals. Variation Diagrams: bivariate and triangularplots. Using variation diagrams to model magmatic evolution. Trace elements: distribution coefficient. Models for solid-melt processes: Batch Melting, Rayleigh fractionation. The Rare Earth Elements :a special group of trace elements. Application of trace elements to igneous systems. II- Isotopes: Stable and Radioactive and Radiogenic Isotopes. Petrogenetic traces and geochronology. Study cases.
