Objectives

Familiarize the students with the possibilities of developing products from algae and cyanobacteria, and what are the main steps and challenges to do this. Knowledge about the present uses of algae and cyanobacteria and their potential utilization in the future, genetic manipulation, bioprospecting, production of algal biomass, selection of species and cultivars and main processing lines.

Learning outcomes and competences

Expertise on the use of algae and cyanobacteria for the production of biomass and other compounds of commercial interest. Knowledge on the genetic manipulation envisaging biotechnological applications.

1 - Algae: whatthey are and diversity. Maingroups.

2 – Main current uses of algae and cyanobacteria: food and feed, phycocoloids, fertilizers, Cosmetic and biomedical industry, biofuels.

3 – Bioprospection: Bioactive coumpounds

4 – Selection of species and cultivars

5- Genetic manipulation of cyanobacteria: vectors, DNA transfer methods, selection, segregation, and cryopreservation. Synthetic Biology methodologies.

6 – Prodction system for microalgae and cyanobacteria

7 – Prodctio nsystem for macroalgae

8 – Systems for integratedproduction

9 – Tecnologies for productionatsea

10 – Future of algal use: ongoing research and new ideas
