Objectives
An Introductory course in Probability and Statistics: acquisition of basic concepts of Probability and Statistics and their application to concrete situation
Particular attention is paid to the presentation and understanding of the concepts, keeping the mathematical treatment on an elementary level.
Learning outcomes and competences
On completing this curricular unit it is expected that the student:
- Can understand the concepts involved in a statistical study and be aware of the various problems that arise in each particular study.
- Can identify and apply appropriate techniques of descritive statistics to organize and summarize data and interpret them;
- Dominates the probability calculus and knows to calculate probabilities associated with the phenomenon under study;
- Be able to characterize random variables and identify the respective probability distributions;
- Be able to make inferences on population parameters applying estimation techniques.
- Be able to understand the general procedures for applying a hypothesis test.

- Basic concepts in Statistics: Populations and samples; the role of randomization; observational and experiment studies; statistical variables.
- Descriptive Statistics: fundamental concepts and tecniques for summarizing data.
- Probability Theory: fundamental concepts, probability interpretations, independence of events and conditional probability, Bayes’ and total probability theorems.
- Random Variables: characterization in discrete and continuous models. Characteristics of ome theoretical distributions (binomial, normal, t-student's and chi-squared). Central limit theorem. Binomial-normal approximation (de Moivre-Laplace theorem); continuity correction. Q-Q plots for a normal distribution.
- Sample distributions.
- Statistical Inference: estimation tecniques; confidence intervals for some parameters; hypothesis tests.

Theoretical lectures with exposition of the course contents.
Practical classes for solving exercises related to each theorietical topic. Support in clarifying theoretical and/or practical problems.
Introduction to the software R for problem solving.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final classification is the mark obtained in the normal examination period (Época Normal) or eventually in the second examination period (Época de Recurso).
In any case, a student with a final grade ≥ 17.5 may eventually be subjected to an extra oral or written test.
All registered students are admitted, without restrictions, to the exams.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
Any type or special examination can be from one the following types: exclusively by an oral examination, only a written exam, one oral examination and a written exam.
The decision for one of the above alternatives is exclusively the responsibility of the teacher responsible for the curricular unit.

According to FCUP regulations, keeping the 'rule':
