FÍSICA II (FIS1008) is an introductory physics course in general physics. Fundamental physical principles of electricity, magnetism, light and thermodynamics are covered.
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able:
- to describe the main features of the force of gravitational attraction and the Coulomb force.
- to understand elementary concepts in electricity, namely electric field and electric potential created by one or more point charges or by other charge distributions; movement of a charge in a uniform electric field; electric dipole moment; intrinsic and induced electric dipoles; action of an electric field on a dipole; interaction between dipoles (van der Waals forces). Apply these concepts to problem solving.
- to understand elementary concepts about electrical circuits, namely electromotive force of a battery; transformation of chemical energy into electrical energy; electric current and electric resistance; DC circuits and Kirchhoff's laws. Apply these concepts to problem solving.
- to understand elementary concepts of magnetism, namely magnetic field; sources of magnetic field; magnetic force on moving charges; movement of a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field; mass spectroscopy. Apply these concepts to problem solving.
- to describe the main characteristics of electromagnetic waves, namely electric and magnetic field of a plane electromagnetic wave; polarization; reflection and refraction of light in the approximation of geometrical optics; interference and diffraction phenomena. Apply these concepts to problem solving.
- to understand elementary concepts of thermodynamic processes and thermal properties of materials, namely temperature and heat; thermal capacity; thermal expansion; thermal conductivity; phase diagrams. Apply these concepts to problem solving.
- to understand the kinetic theory of gases. Apply these concepts to problem solving.
- to answer conceptual questions in different subject areas of the course.

B-LEARNING.
Teaching will be done in a continuous way, both in lectures and in the remaining classes. This requires a commitment to a responsible attendance by students.
Subject´s presentation will be held in lectures.
Recitation classes are designed to review general concepts from lectures and to solve exercises and problems, with the students arranged in small work groups. Formative assessment with Socrative application will also take place in these classes.
In addition to face to face lectures and recitations classes, didactic contents will be made available in Moodle Platform. Associated with these didactic contents, formative tests will also be available (online).
Particular emphasis will be given to motivate students to work throughout the semester. It is considered that learning implies dedicated work and attendance of all those interested in acquiring skills.

Waiver attendance for recitation classes:
Student employees may request a waiver attendance for recitation classes. To be eligible an applicant must provide evidence of eligibility. If they don´t request a waiver attendance for recitation classes they should attend these classes. Failure of this requirement results in a RFF grade.
Exam grade between 0 and 20.
If Exam grade ≥ 9.5 then the student passes.
If 8.0 ≤ Exam grade < 9.5, students may request an oral examination.
According to the “Regulamento de Avaliação do Aproveitamento dos Estudantes” of FCUP.
Any omissions and/or questions regarding this form will be resolved by the course’s instructor.
The jury can demand that the student takes an additional written and/or oral examination.
