Objectives

This course  aims at characterizing the agronomic sector in Portugal, to discuss the production constraints and the major farming systems. For its regional and national importance, particular emphasis is given to cattle and milk production, viticulture and horticulture.

Learning outcomes and competences

The program allows that the student acquire basic knowledge about crop production with high national and international relevance, in accordance with the objectives outlined for this course.

1.1. Farming systems (conventional, integrated pest managment, organic farming)
1.2 Conventional Plant Breeding vs. GMOs

2. Introduction to Horticulture
2.1 Importance and principles of horticulture 
2.2 Trends and challenges in the horticultural sector;
2.3 Steps preceding crop cultivation

3. Introduction to protected cultivation
3.1 Soilless cultivation and types of substrates
3.2 Climate control in greenhouses: objectives and available tools

4. Viticulture and wine Production
4.1 Economic importance in Portugal and in the world.
4.2 Basics of viticulture: planting a vineyard, vine training throughout the vegetative cycle.
4.3 Technology of vinification of white wines, red wines and Port.

5. Cow Milk Production
6. Study visit - integration of the concepts acquired during the course

Teaching methods and learning activities

The exposition of the themes is supported using diverse supporting material (e.g., slides, videos, multimedia). In the last class will be performed a study visit to a production unit.

Eligibility for exams

Attendance at practical lessons (75% of the foreseen)

Calculation formula of final grade

Students will be evaluated with a final exam dealing with the subjects covered during the semester. This test will have a weight of 100% for the final ranking. Students that do not pass the exam (mark < 9.5/20) and those who were not present in the exam, will have another opportunity in a second date of exam.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students subject to special regimes will be evaluated in a final exam.

Classification improvement

Students who want to rise their mark should perform the second exam.
