Objectives
Part I — Pedology
To recognize soil as a system containing solid materials (mineral or organic), liquid materials (soil solution) and gaseous materials (water vapour and other gases), which may support plant growth.
To know the soil forming factors.
To recognize the environmental and social-economic importance of soil systems.
To know the field, laboratory and other methods and techniques commonly used in soil related scientific and technological activities.
Part II — Hydrology
To know the functioning of underground and surface hydrologic systems.
To recognize the environmental and social-economic importance of hydrologic systems.
To know the field, laboratory and other methods and techniques commonly used water resources related scientific and technological activities.

I. Pedology
1. Macroscopic identification and characterization of minerals, rocks and weathered materials.
2. Soil profile studies.
3. Soil sampling. Disturbed and undisturbed soil sampling.
4. Soil texture, particle density, bulk density, porosity, pH, electric conductivity and organic matter. Soil color identification by means of Munsell Color Chart.
5. Soil water measurement. Gravimetric method. The use of electromagnetic probes. Soil water profiles.
6. In situ measurement of soil hydraulic conductivity with the constant head permeameter.
7. Measurement of soil nutrient concentration.
8. Use of soil maps. Related use of soil, topographic and geological maps.
Note: part I includes two field trips.
II. Hydrology
1. Groundwater and surface water sampling.
2. Measurement of water level in wells with an electric probe.
3. Measurement of water pH, electric conductivity, temperature and TDS.
4. Water chemical analysis with portable spectrophotometer.
5. Groundwater movement.
6. Hydrogeologic profiles.
7. Graphic treatment and interpretation of hydrochemical data.
8. Water quality for human and agricultural uses.

Teaching methods and learning activities
The presentation of theoretical classes will be carried out using Microsotf Office Powerpoint. The presentations will be sent to the students as PDF files. Practical classes will include exercises solved in the classroom as well as field trips.
