Jessy Silva is a Plant Biologist with a passion for deciphering the complex cellular and molecular dynamics of Plant Reproduction.
She obtained her Bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of Porto in 2017, followed by a Master’s degree in Functional Biology and Biotechnology of Plants in 2019 from the same institution. During her undergraduate and postgraduate studies, she gained valuable experience working in the Sexual Plant Reproduction and Development (SPReD) laboratory under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Silvia Coimbra, focusing on the roles of Arabinogalactan Proteins (AGPs) in Arabidopis reproduction. Additionally, she completed a training period at Prof. Dr. Matthew Tucker's laboratory as part of the SexSeed (MSCA RISE) project, collaborating with a leading expert in plant reproduction.
Awarded a la Caixa Doctoral INPhINIT - Retaining fellowship, Jessy supported her PhD studies while working as a research assistant at the Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry (LAQV). In 2024, she obtained her PhD in Biology from the University of Minho. Her doctoral research, supervised by Prof. Dr. Manuela Costa and Prof. Dr. Sílvia Coimbra, involved analysing the enzymes responsible for AGP biosynthesis during plant reproduction, significantly advancing the understanding of AGPs' complex roles in plant biology. Throughout her PhD, Jessy also collaborated with Prof. Dr. Alex Costa’s lab at the University of Milan, where she further enhanced her expertise in microscopy.
Her contributions to the scientific community are notable, with several publications in high-impact journals. She has also presented her research at numerous international conferences, such as the International Conference on Sexual Plant Reproduction (ICSPR), Plant Cell Wall Meeting and Plant Calcium Signaling Conference Throughout her career, Jessy has shown strong dedication to science communication, mentoring students, and organising scientific events. She continues to explore her research interests while contributing to the academic and scientific community through mentorship and collaborative efforts.
