Personal Presentation

Andrii Vovk (AV) completed Candidate of Sciences degree in Physics and Mathematics with the Institute of Metal Physics NAS of Ukraine. In 1996 his career with internationally recognized centers around the Globe began. In 1996-1999 he was a Visiting Scientist with Forschungsinstitut fur edelmetalle und metallchemie, Schwaebisch Gmuend, Germany. In 1999-2000 he worked as a Secretary of the Organizing Committee of the 8th European Magnetic Materials and Applications Conference EMMA-2000, 7-10 June 2000, Kyiv, Ukraine. In 2000-2003 as a Post-doctoral researcher and in 2003-2006 as a Research Specialist with Advanced Materials Research Institute (AMRI) at the University of New Orleans, USA (sponsored by DARPA and NSF projects). He developed extensive skills in operation of different modern scientific instruments, cryogenic techniques and measurement procedures for nanostructured magnetic materials in the broad range of magnetic fields, temperatures and resistance values. In 2000-2001 he was in charge for SQUID magnetometer, in 2002-2004 for Physical Properties Measurement System (PPMS) and in 2002-2006 for Thin Films Laboratory and AFM in AMRI to provide support for student’s projects and ensure coordination between teams that were utilizing instruments. In 2007 AV obtained Doctor of Sciences Degree from NAS of Ukraine in the field of Magnetism for investigations on nanostructured films of 3d transition metals. In 2007-2009 AV was a Research Specialist for the Institute of Nanoscience of Aragon, Zaragoza, Spain. In 2009-2017 AV was Investigador Auxiliar with CFMC and Bio-ISI Centers of the University of Lisbon (supported by FCT Ciencia 2008 Program). His researches were targeted on preparation, magnetic and magneto-transport measurements and structural characterization of heterogeneous thin films, low dimensional nanostructures and Heusler alloys and establishing correlations between their magnetotransport and microstructure. Since 2018 AV is with the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at the University of Porto. Currently he is working on NECL Infrastructure project (Network of Extreme Conditions Laboratories, financed by FCT and Programa Operacional Regional do Norte (NORTE 2020)). AV’s responsibilities within NECL include coordination of the research activities on PPMS. AV was local coordinator for FCT project ‘Arrays of magnetic tunnel junctions from nanogranular layered structures in hybrid insulating host (PTDC/FIS/120055/2010)’. AV published 58 papers in international peer review journals (Scopus database returns more than 460 citations, h-index=14). AV supervised two Master students with Kyiv Politechnical Institute. He also taught master courses ‘Nanophysics’(2012-2013) and ‘Thin Films Technologies’ (2015-2016) and took care for ‘Advanced Laboratories (Magnetic measurements/cryogenic techniques)’ (2011) and 'Laboratório de Física' (2013) with Faculdade de Ciencias at the University of Lisboa. In 2020-2024 AV was teaching course of Multifunctional Nanostructures and in 2022-2024 Science and Technology of Materials with Faculdade de Ciencias at the University of Porto.
