  • Mineralogy of asteroids and meteorites
  • Planetary Sciences
  • Cooperative learning
  • Self-regulated learning
  • Climatology and climate change
  • Geophysics

Current research areas:

  • Study of Meteorites and Asteroids – modelling of reflectance spectra of meteorites and asteroids and development of a consistent methodology for determination of the mineralogy of asteroids from their reflectance spectra
  • Rock Physics – simulation of charge generation and transport in rocks under mechanical action
  • Physics Education – active learning, automatic online assessment (creation of online tests in Physics) and self-regulated learning.

Some Projects (local PI, local coPI other):

Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Planetary Geosciences – GeoPlaNet
URL: https://geoplanet-impg.eu/

 EU Grant: 3.432.000,00 EUR

This poject aims to train the future cohort of tomorrow's best researchers. It will prepare them to design, analyse and interpret the data of the future space missions and to address the many challenges of the oncoming Earth and Planetary exploration programmes. Partners HEI: Nantes (FR), Chieti-Pescara (IT) and Coimbra (PT). Associated partners include GeoPlaNet Consortium of 19 partners, (ESA, NASA, Europlanet, Virtual Reality companies). The University of Porto is an associated partner of this consortium.

GeoPlaNet-SP
URL: https://geoplanet-sp.eu/

Global Budget : 263.416,00 EUR

GeoPlaNet-SP project is based on a partnership of 5 European Universities with complementary expertise in Astrophysics and Astronomy, in Planetary Geology and in Planetary and Earth Sciences: Nantes (France) coordinator of the project, Coimbra and Porto (Portugal), Padova and Chieti/Pescara (Italy) and a start-up VR2Planets (France) specialised in Virtual Reality (VR). Activities will be held in 3 European countries. Associated partners are a start-up in Portugal specialised in space instrumentation and the 15 other GeoPlaNet Institutions

Collaboratory for Geosciences

orçamento global: 2.427.690,90EUR
The Collaboratory for Geosciences (C4G) is a distributed research infrastructure (RI) that promotes the networking of researchers and the sharing of equipment, data, collections and tools in Solid Earth Sciences (SES). C4G brings together 15 major players in Solid Earth Sciences in Portugal, from 6 universities, 2 private associations and 3 government agencies.

Some tasks:
  • FCUP member of coordinating council of C4G
  • Coordinator of LA12 - Integrated Services for Cosmic Risk Mitigation – C4G
  • Team Member of Rock Physics and Geomechanics Laboratories WG3 – C4G
  • Member of the Implementation Committee - C4G

EUGLOH: EU Alliances on Global Health
URL: https://www.eugloh.eu/

Global Budget: 5.000.000,00 EUR

EUGLOH consists of 5 research universities - Lund University (Sweden), Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (Germany), Universidade do Porto (Portugal), University of Szeged (Hungary) and Université Paris-Saclay (France) - committed to train new generations of European leaders, innovators, experts and practitioners, who will serve all sectors of society. These challenges include, among others, the impact of climate change and environmental hazards, digital health and technologies for health and well-being, (food, nutrition, etc.). At the same time EUGLOH will promote European values such as solidarity and inclusion, equality, respect for human rights and access to welfare.

Other activities:

  • Asteroid Day Portugal Coordinator (since 2016)
