Master in Functional Biology and Biotechnology of Plants

InformationCourse/CS accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).
The Master in Functional Biology and Biotechnology of Plants aims to promote the excellence in advanced training in functional plant biology and in molecular and cellular technologies, allowing the development of innovative applications of plants in areas ranging from agriculture to medicine, but also in environment and bioenergy. The contact of the students with the business environment in biotechnology is fostered, encouraging their entrepreneurship and promoting the transfer of knowledge to society.

Specific learning objectives in this master:
  • Acquisition of a solid training and a up-to-date knowledge in innovative areas of plant functional and molecular biology and biotechnology.
  • Acquire skills to conceive, design and develop scientific research;
  • Conducting original research that contributes to extending the frontiers of knowledge in Biology of Plants
  • Acquisition of skills to collaborate effectively in a team, prepare and communicate scientific results and prepare and organize laboratory tasks efficiently.
  • Acquisition of the ability to apply developed skills to new situations in a professional and socio-economic context, and implement solutions for innovation and entrepreneurship.
This Master course aims to foster in students the ability to conceive and develop scientific research, preparing them as strong candidates for PhD in Plant Biology or actively intervene in society as entrepreneurs in the areas of application of plants, as senior management or as entrepreneurs.

Admissions Requirements

Will be admitted for application graduates, or legal equivalent, in Biology or in related fields, including the possibilities provided in paragraphs b), c) and d) of article 17 of DL 65/2018 of 08/16/2018.

Note: Candidates not holding the degree at the date of application will be admitted, however they will be subsequently excluded if they cannot prove that they have completed their degree (or equivalent) by the end of the registration period.

Criteria for Selection and Ranking

  1. The ranking will be done according to the following criteria and sub-criteria:
    • Academic curriculum (Formation area and normalized grade of degree) (80%)
      • Subcriterion 1: relevant training area (adaptation of the curriculum to the objectives of the master) (10%)
      • Subcriterion 2: normalized grade of degree (70%)
The adjusted grade is obtained by normalising the grade to the 0-20 scale, adding the value of ln(R/r), and rounding to the nearest integer in the 0-20 scale, with ln expressing the natural logarithm and R and r being, respectively for the University of Porto and the university issuing the degree, the positions in the world ranking published in http://www.webometrics.info
    • Scientific curriculum and professional experience (20%)
      • Subcriterion 1: Journal publications and Conference Communications (10%)
      • Subcriterion 2: participation in research projects or internships in the area of study cycle (10%)
    Criteria for breaking ties:
Credits and ratings obtained in course units in the field of Plant Biology and Biotechnology
  2. Applicants not holding the degree at the date of application (but able to complete it by the date of enrollment in the study cycle) will be ranked according to the criteria and sub-criteria mentioned above, but replacing the final average of bachelor's degree by the weighted average of the courses taken.
