Master in Biological Aquatic Resources

General information

Official Code: 6232
Acronym: M:RBA

Certificates

  • Master's degree in Biological Aquatic Resources (120 ECTS credits)
  • Specialization in Biological Aquatic Resources (60 ECTS credits)

Courses Units

Sustainable Aquaculture

BIOL4069 - ECTS

Revisions of the basic concepts of aquaculture and attainment of the necessary competences for the development of a sustainable aquaculture management.

Contamination by Environmental Toxins

BIOL4118 - ECTS

To provide knowledge on the occurrence and diversity of toxins in the natural environment, explain the common methods for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of toxins and to talk about human and environmental health risks

Experimental Design

BIOL4121 - ECTS

Most biologists contact with the problems of experimental design in a relaxed manner or not at all, refining their experiments empirically on a trial-error basis. During this course special attention will be paid to the logic underlying the whole process of experimental design, from drawing hypothesis, selection of statistical tests, planning and setup of experiments that unambiguously lead to interpretable results.

Population Dynamics in Aquatic System

BIOL4039 - ECTS It is intended that students understand the structure and dynamics of marine, estuarine and freshwater populations.

Water Resources Management

BIOL4114 - ECTS This discipline aims at giving the students a deep understanding of water resources managing process, both in legal and procedural aspects, as well as in technical and scientific ones.

Aquatic Animal Nutrition

BIOL4113 - ECTS

Provide students basis of aquatic animal nutrition and feeding.

Biological Water Quality

BIOL4115 - ECTS

The objectives of this course are.
Characterization of different freshwater ecosystems. Evaluation of water quality in all its aspects biomanipulation Eutrophication of ecosystems and their consequences on the quality of water.

Get competences for learning the techniques of assessment of water quality applying them in the future in various areas of education, research and others.

Environment and Public Health

BIOL4073 - ECTS

To provide knowledge on the importance of One Health, an integrated, unifying approach aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals, and ecosystems. Waterborne diseases and their significance in public health. Identification, understanding, and evaluation of waterborne diseases in the human population.

Aquatic Ecosystems Biodiversity

BIOL4075 - ECTS

  1. Explain the specificities and importance of biodiversity of aquatic ecosystems and its distribution.
  2. Explore the current state and evolution of aquatic. biodiversity, the reasons for the present trends and the consequences for the scenarios found.
  3. Explore the current strategies and instruments for sustainable management and conservation of marine biodiversity.
  4. Provide practical tools for the field and laboratory study of biodiversity of macro- and microorganisms in aquatic ecossystems.
  5. Explore tools for analyzing data collected from the field, laboratory and literature.
  6. Train for building proposals for research projects in biodiversity.

Fish Diseases Diagnosis

BIOL4077 - ECTS

To provide knowledgement concerning etiology, symptomatology and diagnosis of the most important fish diseases.

Physiology of Aquatic Animals

BIOL4117 - ECTS Understanding the main physiological systems of aquatic animals with emphasis on fish and in practical issues related with fish management.

Aquatic Microbiology

BIOL4120 - ECTS

We intend to give the students actualized knowledge about prokaryotes classification and diversity, especially about the most important groups present in the aquatic environments. Traditional, culture-dependent methods will be presented, and their limitations discussed. The available methods for studying microbial communities, including various culture-independent methods, will be presented.

The presence of viruses, particularly bacteriophages, in the aquatic environments, and methods for their study, will also be addressed.

We will also seek to arouse interest / curiosity in students to understand the role of the aquatic environment as a source and / or reservoir of resistant bacteria, and of resistance genes, to clinically relevant antibiotics, framing the theme in the, increasingly, current and important multisectoral approach One Health.

Fisheries

BIOL4040 - ECTS Characterize and argue about the exploitation of fishing resources in Portugal and the world. Address the sustainable exploitation of fishery resources, based on biological knowledge.

Dissertation

BIOL5010 - ECTS

Internship

BIOL5011 - ECTS

Project

BIOL5012 - ECTS

Dissertation Preparation

BIOL4134 - ECTS The Project subject will provide the student with basic information about experimental design and applicable statistical analysis, notions about writing scientific articles, theses and reports, and forms of oral presentation thereof. It also constitutes an opportunity for the student to demonstrate knowledge/understanding of the master's subjects. The student will prepare a research/internship proposal on a topic in the master's area. The written proposal must include a brief review of the literature, a description of the objectives, hypotheses to be tested, procedures to be used and expected results.
