It is intended to provide students with terminology, language and concepts that constitute a knowledge base of multiple fields of human physiology, to be applied subsequently in other course curricular units and professional experience in the future.
It is intended that students are able to understand the function of major human organs and systems with important application in problem solving in the Nutritional Sciences area.
1. LECTURES (28 hours):
Cell Physiology: Cell membranes, signal transduction, intracellular signaling.
Nervous System: General organization; Autonomic nervous system; Action potentials; Neurotransmitters.
Muscle: Mechanisms of activation; Contraction and relaxation; Muscle; Smooth muscle, Heart muscle.
Cardiovascular system: Electrical activity of the heart, Cardiac cycle; Determinants of cardiac systolic and diastolic functions; Regulation of vascular function; Regulation of cardiac output and venous return; Vascular endothelium; Special circulations.
Blood and Haemostasis: Elements of the blood; Platelet physiology, Blood coagulation, fibrinolysis.
Respiratory System: Pulmonary ventilation; Hematosis; Transport of blood gases, pulmonary circulation.
2. THEORETICAL-PRACTICAL CLASSES (28 Hours):
Cell membranes; Synapses; Action potentials; Muscle metabolism; Physiological adaptation to exercise; Electrocardiogram; Cardiac cycle; Pulses and blood pressure;Iron and vitamin B12 metabolism; Blood count and anemia; respiratory function evaluation; Case studies with application of the physiology concepts to the Nutricional Sciences area; Reviews.
2 theoretical classes of 60 minutes per week (total: 28);
2 Theoretical-practical classes of 120 minutes per week (total: 14).
Theoretical classes present concepts of physiology and descriptive explanation of the several issues. Theoretical-practical classes are important for encouragement of the students to take part in the discussion of the concepts acquired and in problem solving, as well as, to the understanding practical examples of the integration of physiology concepts in nutrition sciences. This leads to a better assimilation of the subjects and subsequent learning.

Assiduity to practical classes according to the Academic Regulation.
Assessment has 2 components:
(i) Theoretical-practical assessment (TP), continuous and corresponding to 25% of the final classification
(ii) Theoretical assessement (T) made trough a final examination and corresponding to 75% of the final classification.
Students will be approved if they present a final classification equal or higher than 9.5.
Final classification will result on the application of the formula Final Classification = TP+ 0,75*T
According to the Academic Regulation.
The working students will be graded in the theorical - pratical component by a written examination.
