Nutritional Sciences

The degree in Nutritional Sciences developed itself from the Nutrition course of the University of Porto, created in 1976. The degree was first approved in 1987 and the current curriculum, who adapted to the Bologna process in 2011.

The cycle of studies is accredited by the Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education Agency (A3ES Logo). More information can be found in the reports made available by A3ES.

Objectives

The main objective of the cycle of studies in Nutritional Sciences is the qualification of graduates in the following areas:

Food and human nutrition in the life cycle – to apply the effects of food intake arising from the metabolic use of nutrients and other bioactive compounds as well as the study of foods, food intake, diets and supplements in the life cycle.

Public Health and Epidemiology – To develop and apply the study of food intake, nutritional status and their relationships with the disease;To plan, implement and evaluate community intervention programs.

Clinical nutrition – To implement and to the nutritional status, nutritional requirements and to prescribe appropriate food/nutritional plans according to each pathology.

Food service – To analyze the technical, functional and hygio- sanitary conditions of facilities, staff and foods; Plan menus and optimize the cost/quality of meals.

Research and teaching – To investigate and transmit the knowledge in order to promote health and wellbeing.

Sports – To evaluate the nutritional status, to develop proper eating plans, according to training programs.

Food industry – To collaborate in the development of new products based on nutritional recommendations. Provide technical and scientific support marketing.

Information

To attend this cycle of studies students should have successfully, completed high school or equivalent and have successfully been approved at the specific entrance examinations.

General scheme carried out by the Higher Education Department (DGES):

Vacancies: (to define)

The minimum ratings required for admission are as following:

  1. Admission grade: 100 points (mark 10 in the scale of 0-20)
  2. Entrance examinations: 100 points (mark 10 in the scale of 0-20)

The calculation formula for access is as follows:

  1. High school average - 50%
  2. Entrance examination - 50%

Entrance exams are:

  1. Biology and Geology
  2. Physics and Chemistry

There are other methods of access that are established by FCNAUP.

  1. Special admission procedures:
    - Over 23 years;
    - Students of other Cycles of Studies.
  2. Contests for changes of cycle of studies, transfers and reentry.

The specific conditions for admission to these schemes are published every year in the Information System (SIGARRA) of the Faculty.
