The discipline of Psychology of Art aims to meet two key objectives, which are interrelated. First, highlight the usefulness of psychological concepts and theories and research to address the phenomenon of art, and, secondly, to show that psychology, as a science of man, is not restricted to psychopathology and its practical application far exceeds reduced field of psychotherapy. In other words, the discipline of Psychology of Art aims to sensitize students to the central issues of the discipline through an integrative approach that thinks artistic phenomena as a whole, regardless of their diverse origins ("normal", "pathological", "adult" "child," "primitive," "civilized," etc.)..
The study of art from the psychoanalytic perspective is particularly effective to demonstrate that psychology is not restricted to psychopathology and there are no watertight boundaries between "normal" and "deviant". At the end of training, students will be better prepared to think about art from an integrative approach. On the other hand, they will have acquired a set of knowledge, skills and critical skills they can use in professional and artistic practice.
The program of the course focuses primarily on the presentation and development of major contributions of psychoanalysis as a general theory of human action, for the study of art. Thus, a particular emphasis will be given to the Freudian theory of literary and artistic activity, as well as other authors that extended this research in the field of art.
Generally speaking, throughout the semester various methods of teaching will be used- expository, interrogative, demonstrative, and active - in order to enable better acquisition of the diverse content. In concrete terms, we will use a combination of different pedagogical strategies, in accordance with the material:
- theoretical lectures followed by debates;
- analysis of texts and images;
- documentary film screening;
- occasionally, debates with experts (artists, designers, and other professionals).
