Objectives

Professor Helder Gomes

Based on the analysis of literary works, will discuss the relationship between reality and fiction: the role of fiction in the construction of human experience? What is the relationship between imagination and the real? Can the art as fiction constitute a real transformation tool or is it just an escape space?

Professor DINIZ CAYOLLA RIBEIRO

With the History of Art traditionally dominated by a Western perspective, the seminar "An Other History of Art" emerges as a creative provocation, challenging this dominance to instigate a more inclusive and pluralistic view of art, highlighting the concept of otherness and the multiplicity of human voices and experiences. Throughout the seminar, students will be invited to select a piece of art that somehow reflects this otherness, which could be an expression of a frequently marginalized culture or address artistic themes and styles often overlooked. More specifically, during the seminar, students will be guided to develop a critical reflection on this work, exploring its relevance in the global artistic landscape and deconstructing any prejudices and implicit norms in its interpretation. The main objective is to make this seminar a unique opportunity for students to expand their artistic horizons, stimulate critical thinking, and enrich the collective discourse on what art is and/or can be, providing a platform for less heard artistic voice and promoting a sensitivity towards diversity in arts.

Professor Andreia Magalhães

The seminar focuses on theoretical and artistic research at the intersection between visual arts and cinema. During the semester, we will analyze works that result from the combination of these two artistic domains, each with its own history, specific models of creation, production and presentation, exploring the transfer of processes and the transmutation that arises with the introduction of durational media in the visual arts. We will also promote the articulation between interpretation, reflection and writing on contemporary art and the moving image

Learning outcomes and competences

Prof. H. G.
It is intended that students become familiar with research, study and preparation of written and oral presentations, and that they master knowledge of theoretical nature and develop capacity for deep reflection and for autonomy in research.

PROFESSOR  DINIZ CAYOLLA RIBEIRO

By the end of the course, students will have developed their understanding of Art History, adopting a more inclusive and pluralistic perspective. Moreover, they will be able to select, analyze, and critically interpret pieces of art, especially those that reflect marginalized perspectives, in addition to having expanded their artistic horizons and enriched the collective discourse on art.

Professor Andreia Magalhães

Deepen knowledge of interdisciplinary artistic practices, particularly cinema and the moving image in contemporary art; theoretical, critical and curatorial production related to the moving image. To develop oral and written reflection, train skills in research methods.

Working method

Presencial

Program

Prof. H. G.

The fiction as the actual realization process.

It will be provided to students a list of about twenty literary works (preferably novels, but also short stories and poetry), of which each student will select a book to work.

Starting from the reading and the auxiliary bibliography, is requests to each student to present in class an analysis of the chosen work, according to its dominant issue, which have the following questions attention:

What is the image of the artist?

Which the concept of artistic creation,

Which the concept of power, memory, civilization, etc.

What is the relationship between reality and fiction:

Is it real or imaginary (fiction) the world's image here emerges?

Art is here rather than escape, construction, and manufacturing?

PROFESSOR DINIZ CAYOLLA RIBEIRO

Throughout the seminar, students will need to follow a work process that will be guided by the professor and will involve answering five fundamental questions. In the end, students will have to present a report that answers these questions, discuss the work with the professor, and develop a critical reflection on the artwork, which could be either written or artistic in nature

Professor Andreia Magalhães

The interaction between visual arts and cinema has had a profound influence and a significant impact on the history of contemporary art. From the early 20th century to today, this relationship has triggered artistic, aesthetic, social, and political responses that constantly renew not only artistic production but also our understanding of art. Based on the analysis of key texts and works, this complex history will be addressed, from the earliest artistic experiments with film, through the formation of experimental, expanded, and independent cinema, to the widespread use of projected and moving images in contemporary artistic practices. Topics: The development of cinema as a visual and autonomous art; the opening of fine arts to an expanded and interdisciplinary field. Experimental/underground cinema; expanded cinema; independent cinema. The visual and political dimensions (queer, feminist, activist). Cinema and sculpture; cinema and performing arts. The transposition of cinema to the exhibition space.
