Objectives
This is an introductory course unit to sound in design that aims to provide students with basic knowledge about an expressive universe that, although certainly very familiar, is still largely unknown — from a technical and theoretical point — to students. This course unit is fundamentally theoretical and practical, developing technical skills in tandem with critical knowledge of the field.
Learning outcomes and competences
At the end of this course unit, students are expected to be able to:
- Understand the affordances of sound as a medium, interface and tool for design and art.
- Develop a critical and aesthetic sense in relation to the use of sound in artistic and communicational artifacts.
- Develop basic technical skills for creating sound for audiovisual and computational media.
- Acquire the basic technical and artistic vocabulary of sound design.

Teaching methods and learning activities
The course unit will be conducted through the articulation of expository classes, technical workshops and the development of practical exercises and theoretical reflection. The lectures intend to communicate the main concepts of the course unit's program, illustrating them with case studies that will be discussed with the class. The technical workshops will introduce students to the essential tools for sound production and recording, while practical exercises, always accompanied by theoretical reflection, will allow students to apply the acquired knowledge critically. Evaluation Type
Distributed evaluation without final exam
