Objectives

1) To transmit the necessary knowledge for the development of research in Museology, Curatorial Studies and Artistic Studies, with emphasis on the construction of a scientific object and definition of an appropriate methodology for its empirical verification;

2) to transmit decision-making criteria at each stage of the scientific procedure, promoting the students' progressive autonomy;

3) to promote contact with the knowledge produced by the social sciences and humanities within the scope of artistic studies (theories, concepts);

4) to promote the development of a reasoning matrix and a language of research in Museology, Curatorial Studies and Artistic Studies.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of this unit, students are expected to be able to: 1) know the acts and stages of the scientific procedure and identify the steps to be taken in order to develop an investigation; 2) know the characteristics of the different research methods and techniques, to understand the epistemological implications of their use and to be able to choose the most relevant ones according to the scientific object they have constructed; 3) build and write a research project, in its substantive aspects (eg. delimitation of a conceptual framework, definition of a scientific object, identification of an appropriate methodology) and formal (eg. structure, bibliography, bibliographic citations).

1. Philosophical implications for choosing research methods and procedures.

2. Formalize research.

- Analysis of the problem (finding, formulating, limiting, and stating the research problem)

- Addressing the problem (defining strategies to address the problem; determining research methodologies; gathering, analyzing, interpreting data; drawing and summarizing conclusions consistent with the original problem)

3. Conduct literature reviews.

4. Select appropriate research methodology with an understanding of research design parameters for procedures to collect, analyze, interpret, and present information.

- Presentation of research (dissertation components, writing styles appropriate to research design, style manuals, & ethical considerations)

Teaching methods and learning activities

The classes have a theoretical-practical component (TP) and are complemented by bibliography and pedagogical support materials used in the classes (presentation slides, texts, etc.). Tutorial Orientation (OT) sessions are also held, with analysis and production of thematic texts and individual or collective presentations
