Suitable for English-speaking students

Objectives

understand, design, coordinate, produce, manage and present an autochthonous, authorial, autonomous and independent editorial project;

to rethink the concept of the book object, freeing it from the mere function of content transmitter, written or visual, granting it pertinence as both artistic object and critical emitter;

create, recycle and innovate using sustainably limited resources and technologies.

Learning outcomes and competences

The subject of this discipline will focus on the evolution of the object book as a publication and outstanding support of the greatest discoveries of humanity; while the writing allowed the diffusion of the communication the paper support allowed its fixation for future memory; based on this essential and unavoidable theme of visual design and culture, students will be confronted and challenged to design a unique and autonomous publication in order to test both the knowledge acquired during their academic training and to provoke or recreate the memory of this object in our society.

Working method

Presencial

Program

Theme: book object vs. brand/portuguese culture.

Sub-themes: experimental; guide; script; manisfesto

Support: the project can be designed and edited to any size (paper or screen), such as: blog, webzine, interactive installation, infographics, flyers, cartographic map, brochure, newspaper, magazine, dictionary, glossary, encyclopedia, book, multiple or fanzine.

Mandatory literature

Silva Artur Santos 080; Tarefas infinitas. ISBN: 978-972-8848-84-2

Bringhurst, Robert; Elementos do estilo tipográfico , Cosac Naify, 2006

Teaching methods and learning activities

The classes will take an expositive and reflective approach on fundamental design themes as an area of artistic or professional activity intrinsically related to the curricular project.

The students should work in groups (up to four elements) on the theme and the sub-themes proposed for this course unit, in order to base the approach to the chosen project, translating it at the end into a theoretical report and a prototype of a differentiating concept, pragmatic and functional. Both components (theoretical and practical) will be presented publicly.

Eligibility for exams

. As a discipline primarily expository, the evaluation of the student follows the report delivered (30%) and the relevance of the prototype (50%), assuming the public presentation as a compulsory and essential element in the understanding and validation of theoretical and practical component;

. Specific parameters (quality of the report and additional prototype). Evaluation grid to be presented in the class presentation;

. A student is considered to attend the curricular unit if, having been regularly enrolled, he/she does not exceed the limit number of absences corresponding to 25% of the planned classes (more information: read article 10º of the new Student Assessment Regulations of the faculty);

. The approval in the curricular unit is conditioned to attendance, participation in classes and delivery of the curricular project.

Calculation formula of final grade

. Attendance (20%) + Report (30%) + Project prototype (50%);

. This course, given its strong expository, is not subject to assessment in a single moment, so it can not be replaced by examination of written appeal.

Examinations or Special Assignments

The non-participation in the cases referred in 75% of classes may require oral discussion of the evaluation elements presented, and the realization of a written test on the subjects of the course.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

As provided in FBAUP Regulation Assessment.

Classification improvement

Conducting theoretical and practical work.

Observations

All the work must be presented to the Professor, otherwise you will not be considered in the classification process.
