Objectives

To introduce and develop skills in drawing, understood as an operative instrument of knowledge and recognition; to develop perceptual and visual acuity in relation to different types of drawing; to understand drawing as a vehicle that operates, interacts and relates our perception with representation; to develop skills in understanding, manipulating and selecting different ways of making and using drawing representational systems; to provide knowledge in the context of drawing; to learn the meaning and know how to apply the basic terminology of drawing; to alert the student on the importance of the heritage and history of drawing.

Learning outcomes and competences

Use and understand drawing as an operative instrument of knowledge and recognition.

Ability to deal with complex visual information in a clear, proportionate and critical way, relating it with different purposes and drawing modes.

Capacity to mobilize and adapt procedures and strategies to the work in progress.

 Knowledge and versatility in the use of media and drawing techniques.

 

Relate the acquired knowledge, history, modes of drawing, with individual expectations.

  1. Enabling vision


The issues of representation: what we see, what we draw. The mechanisms of vision - visual sensors, perception, cognition; the cerebral hemispheres. The Measurement Instruments: transparent plan, the display, the angles measurer, the grid. Spatial perception and representation. Size and distance (scale and proportion). Map and measure. Full and empty. Line and spot. Direct spot and contour. Framing, scales and the skyline.

2.1. The drawing acts: operational strategies and means of representation The action strategies: sketch and study. Specificities and operational skills. The means of representation: Systems (geometric perspectives, conical, axonometric drawings, maps) and Non Systems (atmospheric perspective, diagrams).


2.2. In and beyond the superfície_ understanding, organizing, communicate. The real and their different representations: intentions and strategies. The internal relationship / external: Anatomy of form, structure and volume, modeling and tonal values. Consolidation of percetivas skills and graphical representations. Its relation to the purposes

Teaching methods and learning activities

The 405 hours of work (HT) in this course are organized as follows:
192 contact hours (HC) from lecture classes to mostly practical exercises, including critical analysis of students work. The remaining 213 hours are used by the students in the development of their individual work and skills. The course also provides field trips for thematic classes and visits to exhibitions and places of interest, being also open for seminars, workshops, etc.

Eligibility for exams

Evaluation is continuous and constant throughout the course and respects its planned schedule.
It is expected from the student: correct implementation of the proposed working methods; strict compliance with the proposed work plan; attendance and punctuality; application of observation skills through different types of drawing; understanding of the constructive attitudes of drawing; understanding the different ways of drawing and representational systems; acquaintance with the historical heritage of drawing; ability to organize and systematize the work; involvement and ability to work individually; capacity for reflection and self-criticism.

Calculation formula of final grade

Laboratorial work: 50%

Field work: 30%

Active participation: 20%
