Objectives

"Introduction to Contemporary Culture" is a theoretical curricular unit common to both Degree in Design and Visual Arts. On an introductory basis, the aim of the teaching program is to provide references and tools so that the student can understand fundamental aspects of contemporary culture, as well as familiarize himself with the main theories and with the authors who have considered this condition. The program transmits references that allow the student to understand manifestations and stages where culture presents itself, be it in the structure of society and its everyday phenomena, or in the interpretations and critical proposals formulated by the areas of visual and urban cultures.

Exploring the transversality of the notion of "culture," and the contradictions inherent in the contemporary condition, a multiplicity of approximations and readings are fostered which seek to instill in the student the capacity for critical reflection on reality, as well as to awaken the reflexivity and consciousness of the own proposals.

The contents are divided in two parts, a set of introductory classes that characterize in a diachronic perspective the advent of contemporary societies (in a Western perspective), followed by thematic classes more directed to the art and the design, that approach artistic thought and production /cultural.

The bibliography offers references of Critical Theory, Visual Culture and Urban Culture.

Theoretical component: The theoretical structure of the course is divided into two parts, a first set of sessions introduces general questions to understand notions of culture and contemporaneity, modernity, urbanity, consumption, among others. The second theoretical part consists of a set of classes where the critical reflection on contemporaneity is introduced, either through various seminal authors, counterculture and subculture practices that came to influence the dominant cultures, or even in reference to different artistic practices (and which debate and question dominant patterns of culture. The theoretical part of the class is about 1h20m.

Practical component: Each weekly session allows about 30 minutes to answer questions about the practical work. The work consists of a group exercise to be developed throughout the semester and to be delivered after the Christmas holidays. They are aware that both classes are large, so students should manage their timetable so that groups can be set up and assignments prepared.
