This course aims to create a theoretical reflection field around architectural intervention in archaeological contexts, addressing analysis methodologies and intervention tools, as well as project experiences carried out by transdisciplinary teams.
To this end, we will have the participation of architects with extensive experience in interventions in ruins, who will personally present their projects. The invited guests for this course include Alexandre Alves Costa (Atelier 15), Miguel Ángel de la Iglesia (LABPAP), Luís Miguel Correia (COMOCO), João Mendes Ribeiro, and Luigi Franciosini.
Additionally, the course seeks to foster the formation of theoretical discussion groups and/or intervention project development in the specified area, in collaboration with other educational institutions and the Centro de Estudos de Arquitectura e Urbanismo (CEAU-FAUP). It also aims to strengthen international partnerships in research and knowledge transfer. An example of this collaboration is the development of Integrated Master's Dissertations at FAUP.
This course intends to equip students with tools for analyzing and problematizing architectural heritage, identifying archaeological heritage intervention as a distinct field from monumental or common heritage.
Regarding the interpretation of archaeological remains—witnesses of an incomplete and fragmented architecture—the course seeks to raise awareness of the importance of drawing as an analytical and design tool. This principle applies both in the act of designing and in the reverse process, from ruin to reconstruction.
Thus, the course aims to contribute to the development of a critical and informed perspective on the subject, as well as to enhance professional skills applicable to similar situations.

The teaching method involves theoretical lectures presenting various complementary approaches to architectural intervention in an archaeological context. These will cover both theoretical aspects—exposing principles and methods to consider—and practical/project-based aspects through case studies presented by renowned academic and professional experts.
