Objectives
Domain of images: understanding the nature, types, methods, modes, functions and values of images. Knowing different theoretical, critical and interpretative orientations. Understand methodological concepts from philosophy, art history, anthropology, hermeneutics and phenomenology. Consider the study of the image as an over-determined and open interpretation (Freud).
Instrumental and methodological skills: researching names, notions, concepts, discourses and narratives (documentary archives and theoretical devices); describing, characterising, identifying; interpreting images and image systems (montage and the atlas - Warburg)
Learning outcomes and competences
Learning is the result of experience, autonomy and critical awareness regarding the use of theoretical-practical procedures, as well as skills in assembling knowledge and images, as well as exposing and explaining the mapping of the relationships involved in the study of the image(s).

Contents and problems
1. research under the condition of names: image, imagination, imitation, real, virtual, idea, simulacrum, etc. Research context and framework: philology, philosophy and the history of the arts and images. Seeing, reading and interpreting/imagining. A world within a world: images and art; images and thought. From Plato's metaphysics to Merlau-Ponty's phenomenology and Freud's psychoanalysis. Mimesis: copy and simulacrum. Real and virtual. The foundation of the visible and the invisible. 'Truth' and the power of the false.
Ontological regimes of images. Analogism, naturalism, animism and totemism. Anthropology: death and image. Double face; simultaneous contradiction between presence and absence, between past and present; between form and emotion. Time and the 'migration' of images.
2. Questions of method. The atlas of images. The relationship, movement and montage of images. the role of memory; psychic tension. Determination and over-determination. Permanence and dynamics of transformation. Forms and content. Metamorphosis and emotion. Aby Warburg and Warburgian methodology. Formalism, empathy, anthropology, the archive and the atlas. The notions of Nachleben, Polaritat and pathosformeln. Iconology of intensities. Anachronism and the heterogeneity of times.
