Objectives
This Curricular Unit, thought as a complement to History of Contemporary Architecture but with a more limited program (geographically and chronologically), is focused on certain aspects of post-war architectural culture in the Iberian context.
Its first objective is to deepen a critical point of view of contemporary Iberian architecture through a series of debates, not only national, but also international. Its second objective is to explore the relationship between theory, criticism and project, a relationship that the generations born in the 1920s and 1930s cultivated ina particularly committed way. Finally, the course proposes a wider reflection on the way in which certain debates are assimilated in "peripheral" contexts with regard to theoretical production.
Learning outcomes and competences
- stimulate the critical reading of architectural works;
- to frame architectural production in broader debates;
- to weave relations between theory and practice;
- develop the ability to analyze texts, projects and works by a given author;
- encourage personal interpretation, oral exposition and the defense of one's own ideas;

Teaching methods and learning activities
The Curricular Unit is organized in 12 sessions with 90 minutes duration each, divided as follows: the first 10 are theoretical sessions, in which 10-15 minutes are reserved for individual assistance to students; the last 2 are final review sessions, with individual presentations and oral debate.
At the beginning of the course, a practical exercise is presented, to be carried out individually by each student. Based on the knowledge acquired in previous years, and with the support of the theoretical sessions, each student must choose a work of Portuguese or Spanish architecture (designed or built between the 1950s and 1980s) to analyze. The selection of the case study must be justified and framed within the debates presented in the theoretical sessions, which will serve as an argument for the critical analysis.
The analysis should be summarized in an A1 format panel, which may include text, hand drawing, CAD drawing, 3D models, photographs, photomontage, etc. At the same time, a presentation in PowerPoint or similar should be prepared, containing all the information included in the panel plus additional information deemed necessary, without a limit of slides, but limited to 10-12 minutes exposure time.
