Objectives

The general objectives of FACT are twofold. On one hand, to give theoretical and practical knowledge for using critically photography as a research instrument and support for communicating and representing Architecture, city and Territory. On the other hand, to raise the awareness of students for using different qualitative methods to conduct research using visual instruments for inquiring critically those spaces.

Initially students are asked to analyze, question and confront a set of public spaces and architecture, exploring the potential of photography, as well as the accessibility and interactivity on the Internet for communicating different experiences and perceptions of urban space. During the semester the students create a photobook and a visual portfolio in the scopio network platform on the web. This portfolio consists of an interactive visual narrative made up with images and text supporting a set of ideas that posit a position, argument or story about a particular subject or problem of the urban area being studied.

This photobook and viusla portfolio can be used later as the basis for a case study related to research on photography and digital media applied to the reading of public space and architecture, and therefore integrated in the work of the thesis to finalize the second cycle of the course.

Learning outcomes and competences

Acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for using photography as a research tool and media support for communication and representation of Architecture, City and Territory

Acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to explore the potential of photography for critically communicating the city spaces and thow they are lived and transformed by people.

Acquire the knowledge and skills needed to create a photobook and a visual portfolio in scopio network, consisting of images and text that support the set of ideas able to formulate a position, argument or story about a particular problem of city space.

The aim of FACT is to lead students to explore, question and discuss the potential of digital photography and interactive platforms in Internet for representing and questioning the City's public space and architecture.
The results of this research work are a photobook and a set of visual narratives – digital portfolios. These photobooks and digital portfolios describe certain problems and characteristics of the studied urban area and communicate a new perspective about their public spaces and the way people perceive and live in them.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The methodological principles that orientate this discipline have as fundamental pillarsto foster and facilitate communication and exchange of ideas between students and teachers and make it possible for students to have an active role in their own educational process in order to arouse their interest about the program, encourage cooperation and teamwork, and promote a greater self -responsibility in regards to the development and achievement in their work. It is intended, therefore, to adopt a strategy of work capable of leading the students to develop both group and individual projects and, without prejudice to the traditional assessment methods, adopt a process of brainstor of ideas and self -assessment of the work done during the semester.
The discipline is developed in two parallel vectors: one theoretical and the other pratical.
The practical classes are broken down into two thematic blocks .
It is intended to give the theoretical foundations required for the development of the photography projects and communication exercises that are proposed . This means giving students the critical knowledge so that they are able to question and discuss the potential of photography and the accessibility and interactivity on the Internet for critical communication and perception of public space. Then to make them awareness of how they can use quantitative and qualitative methods in investigation on these spaces.

Eligibility for exams

To obtain frequency it is necessary to ensure the attendance of at least 75% of predicted classes and get the minimum of 9.5 resulting from the activity of class participation and individual work to accomplish.

(a) PA1: Control and ability to explore the potential of photography and editing programs;
(b) PA2: Exploration and consistency of visual narratives and methods adopted to analyze and explore space and communicate the content of each exercise (how the ideas and argument about the public space were expressed through visual narratives presented);
(c) PA3: Structure and development of the text that accompanies the final work;
(d) PA4: Attendance and student interest.

Classification improvement

Refine the photography communication porject (the visual narrative work) that will be evaluated again according to the defined criteria.
