Objectives

This course aims to create a theoretical field of discussion around the issues related to architectural intervention in archaeological context, addressing methods of analysis and intervention tools as well as work experience carried out by cross-disciplinary teams.

It is also objective of the discipline to enhance the formation of theoretical reflection groups and / or preparation of intervention projects in that area, in particular for developing Master Theses in FAUP, in conjunction with other educational institutions and the Centro de Estudos de Arquitectura e Urbanismo (CEAU-FAUP); strengthening the cooperation with international partners, in terms of dimensions of research and knowledge transfer.

Learning outcomes and competences

This course aims to provide the students with reading and questioning tools in architectural heritage context, identifying the intervention in archaeological heritage as a specific intervention field, which distinguishes it from the monumental or current assets.

In terms of interpretation of the archaeological remains, witnesses of an incomplete and fragmented architecture is intended to raise awareness among students of the importance of design as an analytical tool and design, that principle applies both in the project itself, but can also be applied the other way around, from ruin to built; and no one has better tools and methods to undertake the task of deducting the absence than the architect.

It is intended to contribute to the construction of a critical and enlightened position on the selected theme, as well as for the development of professional skills in similar situations.

Teaching methods and learning activities

It is proposed as a method of teaching the presentation of lectures, through various complementary approaches to architectural intervention in archaeological context, whether in theoretical terms, exposing the principles and methods to consider, both in practical and projective terms through examples submitted by guests of recognized academic merit and / or professional.
