Objectives
The curricular unit of Theory and Methodology of Sports Training (TMTD) is located in the 2nd year of the Sports Sciences course. This curricular unit is not specifically oriented to any field of sport practice or sport discipline. The curricular unit of Theory and Methodology of Sports Training is oriented to the study of sport performance, particularly the study of the theoretical and methodological fundamentals of sport performance development and its formal verification (in testing or competition). Thus, changes in sport performance induced by deliberated practice are the main issue of this curricular unit.
In general, this unit aims to provide students with basic knowledge about the theoretical and methodological principles of sports training, and by this way allowing them to access and respond successfully to more specific educational and training demands within the different areas included in the Sports Sciences curriculum, such as elite sports training, sports training for populations with special needs or training for health and fitness. Therefore, the curricular unit has propaedeutic features supporting the educational training in more specific professional settings like physical education and sports at school, sports rehabilitation, or recreational and leisure sport. The general purpose of this curricular unit is to develop attitudes and values that enable students the realization of their future professional practice in a competent, efficient, enthusiastic manner and based on ethics and responsibility.
Learning outcomes and competences
It is expected that the educational training plan allow the students:
i) To know and understand the conceptual framework of training as a directed and systematic pedagogical process aimed at modifying the state of preparation for performing sports tasks;
ii) The understanding and interpretation of the factors that affect the capacity of sports performance; iii) the understanding of the relationship between the pedagogical and didactic decisions of organization and steering the training and the repercussions in athletes biology, learning ability and in performance, considering that the physical exercise represents an essential learning mean for the development of the mastery in the accomplishment of the sports activity and a means of aggression / adaptation with consequences in the organic structure and function;
iv) the acquisition of competences in the application of the principles and methodological procedures of programming, evaluation and prescription of the training of the various factors of income.

Teaching methods and learning activities
The unit of TMTD occurs in the 1st semester of 2nd year of the curriculum, with a weekly schedule of four hours, corresponding to a 2-hour lecture and a 2-hour pratical session .
From the standpoint of the contents development, the lecture will address the fundamentals of the theory of training. The teaching strategy to be followed will be expository or alternatively in the form of seminar with previous formulation of tutorials for further interaction between the teacher and students. In each class, questions will be formulated to guide the study and to evaluate the retention of knowledge covered.
Practical classes will resume the topics covered in the lectures. The classes will be planed and conducted predominantly in the form of training scenarios, encouraging the participation of students in organizing and conducting the practice and creating conditions for the conscious development of leadership procedures, training supervision and training methods application.

Eligibility for exams
The evaluation in the discipline of TMTD shall be made according the regulations of University of Porto and the Pedagogical Council of FADEUP. Only the students with a class attendence rate of 75% will be admited to the final exam.
Calculation formula of final grade
Approval in the curricular unit is granted to those students achieving a score of 9,5/20 in the final exam.

Through a written examination test or any other form in agreement with the course director and the teachers of the curricular unit and still in compliance with the provisions of the course regulations and the prerogatives established by law.

Through written examination test as previewed in the course regulations and in the calendar of evaluations.
