Objectives
At the end of this curricular unit is intended that students have achieved the following objectives: (1) identify problems, designs, methods and techniques of research in epidemiology, (2) understand the broad area of epidemiology and its application to physical activity and exercise, (3) to present the most relevant information in epidemiology of physical activity, (4.) Understanding the role of physical activity and inactivity in the development of the disease and the means by which physical activity can contribute to the prevention of disease.
Learning outcomes and competences
This curricular unit is divided into two broad areas. The first area will seek to address key issues, concepts, designs, methods and techniques of research in epidemiology. The second area will focus on more particular aspects of the area of epidemiology of physical activity including: (1) the association of physical activity as health-related behavior, (2) the distribution and determinants of levels and patterns of physical activity, (3 ) the interrelationship between physical activity and other behaviors, (4) application of this knowledge in preventing and controlling disease and promoting health.

Teaching methods and learning activities
This curricular unit will be divided in three parts. The first part of a theoretical nature intended will be the teaching of contents referred above. In the second part, students will present and discuss a reference paper in the field of epidemiology of physical activity. The third part will be devoted to carrying out a small paper on a particular topic and using a database provided by the teacher. The evaluation will be conducted in three phases.

The evaluation will be conducted in three phases. The first phase will consist of a written examination on the matters addressed in the first part of the curricular unit. The second phase will include reading, presentation and public discussion of a reference paper. The third phase will involve a short scientific paper (±2000 words).
