Doctoral Program in Marine Science, Technology and Management

Admissions Requirements

Candidates of any nationality may apply. This PhD may receive applications from students with degrees outside the Natural Sciences, especially those who wish to enrol in the following branches: Integrated Management of the Sea and Technological Progress, and Engineering and Business Management. There are three general admission criteria to be admitted to this PhD:

  1. A master's degree (M.Sc.) with a minimum of 120 ECTS; or a higher education course with a minimum of 300 ECTS including at least 120 ECTS at the level of a University Master's degree.
  2. A minimum admission grade of 14/20 or equivalent for the BSc or undergraduate degree, and of 16/20 or equivalent for the MSc.
  3. A recent proof of proficiency in the English language.

Exceptionally, candidates with grades lower than those required in paragraph ii) may also be selected, based on an academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognised by the Academic Committee as suitable for the achievement of the Marine Science programme.


Selection and Ranking Criteria

The evaluation and selection of candidates will obey the principles of objectivity, equity, equal opportunities, merit and capacity. The objective is to evaluate the candidates' proven academic excellence and potential. The following criteria and weights will be used:

  1. Curriculum vitae: 30%, including grades of academic degrees (15%), and experience measured as number and significance of publications, participation in projects and other relevant components (15%);
  2. Letters of recommendation: 10%;
  3. Motivation letter: 20%, considering its quality and clarity;
  4. Project Synopsis: 30%, considering its intellectual and scientific merit based on quality, clarity, originality and innovation and feasibility within the time of the Doctoral Program;
  5. Degree of internationalization: 10%, considering the existence and duration of the mobility period in the foreign institution of the co-supervisor.

Each of the above criteria will be rated on a scale of 0-20, and the final grade will be obtained as the weighted average of the separate grades.


Candidate tie-breaker criteria::

For applicants with equal ranking, the youngest candidate will be ranked first among them.
