The ICBAS conducts fundamental and applied research in health and life sciences.The institute hosts and participates in diverse research units, namely in:1. Centres located in the ICBAS:
- Unit for Research and Formation about Adults and Elderly People (UnifAI)
- Multidisciplinary Unit for Biomedical Research (UMIB)
2. Centres located outside the ICBAS:
- Centre for Animal Science Studies (CECA)
- Centre for Research in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO)
- Centre for Research of the Portuguese Oncology Institute - Porto
- Centre for Marine and Environmental Research (CIMAR). Associated Laboratory
- Institute for Cellular and Molecular Biology (IBMC). Associated Laboratory
- Institute of Pathology and Molecular Immunology of University of Porto (IPATIMUP). Associated Laboratory
- Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry – Clean Technologies and Processes (REQUIMTE)
